Wealth of Four Tech Billionaires Plunges by USD 204 Billion After Trump’s Inauguration

The inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, was attended by four of the world’s wealthiest figures from the tech industry. However, in less than two months since the event, their fortunes have plummeted significantly.

The billionaires in question are Elon Musk (Tesla), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), and Sergey Brin (Google). According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, their combined net worth has declined by USD 204 billion (approximately IDR 3,360 trillion) since Trump's inauguration.

Before the inauguration, the period between Trump’s election victory and his swearing-in was a prosperous time for the ultra-wealthy, as the S&P 500 Index repeatedly hit all-time highs. However, expectations that Trump's leadership would further boost the stock market suddenly shifted.

Since taking office, the S&P 500 has dropped 6.4%, driven by mass layoffs of government employees and uncertainty surrounding trade policies, which have unsettled the stock market. The companies led by these four billionaires suffered the biggest losses, with their total market valuation plunging by USD 1.39 trillion since January 17, the last trading day before Trump's inauguration.

Elon Musk Suffers the Biggest Losses

Among the four billionaires, Elon Musk has endured the greatest financial setback. On December 17, 2024, his net worth reached a record USD 486 billion, making him the wealthiest person ever recorded on Bloomberg’s wealth index.

However, since January 20, Musk has lost USD 148 billion, as Tesla’s stock value continues to decline. The drop was largely due to a consumer boycott, as many customers opposed Musk’s support for right-wing politicians. In Germany, Tesla sales plummeted more than 70% within the first two months of 2025.

Jeff Bezos faced a similar fate, losing USD 29 billion, as Amazon’s stock fell 14% since January 17.

As the co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin still holds 6% of Alphabet’s shares, Google's parent company. However, when Alphabet's stock dropped 7% in early February 2025, Brin’s wealth also shrank by USD 22 billion.

Meanwhile, Meta’s stock initially rose 19% from mid-January to mid-February, but all those gains have vanished, causing Mark Zuckerberg to lose USD 5 billion in net worth.
