Peretas menguasai akun Instagram BAYC pada 25 April 2022 dan dilaporkan mencuri 24 Bored Apes dan 30 Mutant Apes yang bernilai sekitar $ 13,7 juta.

Scammers membuat sebuah postingan pada akun instagram yang berhasil mereka retas dengan menyebutkan bahwa peluncuran metaverse BAYC yang akan datang ditetapkan pada tanggal 30 April 2022 serta meminta pengguna untuk menghubungkan alamat dompet kripto mereka ke program airdrops palsu yang dibuat peretas.

Scammer berhasil mentransfer NFT Bored Ape dan Mutant Ape dari dompet kripto yang terhubung ke alamat dompet baru yang mereka buat dari program airdrops palsu ini. Terdapat Kira-kira 54 Apes dicuri, berdasarkan informasi dari daftar transfer terbuka di OpenSea.
Berita tentang peretasan ini pertama kali muncul di media sosial dan Reddit, setelah itu akun Twitter resmi BAYC mengonfirmasinya.
