DIGIVESTASI - Vintage bags are trending among global celebrities, such as Rihanna and Bella Hadid, who are often seen looking fashionable with vintage bags from top brands. The popularity of these bags over 20 years old is increasing, making them sought after by fashion enthusiasts and collectors alike.
There are two main reasons why vintage bags attract attention. First, their rarity makes them unique and exclusive. The rarer an item is, the higher its value, and the less likely it is that someone else will own the same bag. Second, luxury vintage bags have the potential for a high resale price, depending on the brand, condition and rarity.
“Currently, the most sought-after are Chanel and Hermes, both for bags, clothes, and accessories,” said Belle & Kate founder Ardine Nakety at the launch of Belle & Kate Vintage in Jakarta, Wednesday (9/10). She added that her team curates vintage items from Japan that are proven to still be in good condition despite dating back to the 1990s, with prices that are more affordable compared to stores.
In addition to exclusivity, vintage bags are also considered more environmentally friendly amid the rise of fast fashion that has a negative impact on the environment.
But can vintage bags be used as investment instruments? Vintage collector Felicia Kawilarang said that not all luxury bags produced in the 1990s can be used as investments. Based on her experience, only bags from fashion houses Hermes and Chanel have a high selling value in the secondary market, especially for rare collections. Both brands are famous for their classic designs that remain in demand throughout the ages.
“I like vintage collections as an investment. I bought Chanel in January and only sold it last month (September), the profit was 30 percent,” she said in a conversation with CNBC Indonesia.
Meanwhile, certified financial planner, Ayyi Ahmad Hidayah, provides three tips for those who want to invest in luxury vintage bags. First, make sure you understand the product so that you can distinguish between original and fake. Second, monitor the price movement in the market to avoid fraud. Lastly, Ayyi suggests joining a community of collectors who can be a potential target market for vintage goods.
