Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a leading Taiwanese chipmaker, has announced a $100 billion investment to expand its chip production in the United States. The announcement was made directly by President Donald Trump on Thursday (March 6, 2025).
According to The Guardian, Trump hailed this investment as a monumental move by one of the most powerful tech companies in the world. With this additional funding, TSMC's total investment in the U.S. will reach $165 billion, which will be used to build five new fabrication facilities in Arizona.
As a key supplier of semiconductors for major firms like Nvidia and Apple, TSMC plays a crucial role in artificial intelligence (AI) development. This investment aligns with the Trump administration’s ambition to position the U.S. as a global AI powerhouse.
China has strongly criticized TSMC’s growing investment in the U.S. Previously, Trump accused Taiwan of stealing the American chip industry, as the island dominates global semiconductor manufacturing for devices ranging from smartphones to fighter jets.
Chinese officials claim that Taiwan is essentially giving away its semiconductor business for free in exchange for political support from the Trump administration against Beijing’s influence.
These accusations were made by Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office in China, who mockingly suggested that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) might soon be renamed United States Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Additionally, Fenglian speculated that TSMC is in talks with Intel to acquire shares in the American chip giant. However, neither TSMC nor Intel has commented on these claims, and the Taiwanese government stated that it has no new information regarding TSMC’s foreign investments.
"Taiwan's shameless actions are merely an attempt to curry favor with the United States," Fenglian remarked.
Taiwan’s government swiftly issued an official statement dismissing these allegations, emphasizing that TSMC remains a cornerstone of Taiwan’s economy.
