The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) failed to maintain its position above the psychological level of 7,700 and ended Thursday’s trading session (April 16, 2026) in negative territory. The decline was driven by net selling activity from foreign investors, particularly in large-cap banking stocks.
According to data from the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), foreign investors recorded total net sell of Rp982.31 billion. In the regular market, net selling was even higher at Rp1.01 trillion, while the negotiated market saw a net buy of Rp28.91 billion.
The most significant foreign selling pressure occurred in major banking stocks. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA) recorded net sell of Rp369 billion, followed by PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI) at Rp302.5 billion, and PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (BMRI) at Rp160 billion.
This selling pressure was also reflected in stock price movements at the close. BBCA shares ended at Rp6,525, down 0.38 percent after declining from around Rp6,650 and touching a low of Rp6,500. Similarly, BBRI shares dropped 0.22 percent to Rp4,640. Meanwhile, BMRI shares had earlier reached Rp4,680 before weakening and moving sideways at lower levels.
On the other hand, one stock showed relative resilience by posting a modest gain of 0.29 percent to Rp3,410. Although it had fallen to Rp3,380 during the session, it managed to rebound and return to positive territory.
Meanwhile, foreign investors continued to accumulate shares in commodity and energy sectors. PT Petrindo Jaya Kreasi Tbk (CUAN) posted net buy of Rp61.1 billion, followed by PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MEDC) at Rp50.8 billion, and PT Merdeka Gold Resources Tbk (EMAS) at Rp50.3 billion.
BEI data shows that IHSG closed down by 2.20 points or 0.03 percent at 7,621.38. Throughout the day, the index moved within a fairly wide range, hitting a low of 7,575.52 and a high of 7,705.03.
At the opening, IHSG started higher at 7,663.34 and even continued its upward movement past the 7,700 level. However, increasing selling pressure caused the index to reverse direction, briefly falling below 7,600 before ending the session flat.
A total of 356 stocks advanced, 318 declined, and 147 remained unchanged. Trading activity was quite active, with a total volume of 39.81 billion shares and 2.63 million transactions recorded.
