DIGIVESTASI - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has responded to the ongoing developments regarding Apple's investment in Indonesia, which requires the Cupertino-based company to invest USD 1 billion, or around IDR 16 trillion, in order to market the iPhone 16 in the country.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that the Indonesian government expects a more concrete commitment from Apple, so that Indonesia is not only seen as a market by the global company.
“Regarding Apple's investment, we hope they will make more concrete initiatives to fulfill their commitment. One of them is related to the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) regulated by the Ministry of Industry. We also want Apple to have a greater impact on digital talent in Indonesia,” Nezar said during the Nex-BE Fest 2024 event in Jakarta on Thursday (December 5, 2024).
Nezar explained that, in addition to committing to the TKDN, which regulates telecommunications devices in Indonesia, Apple is also expected to help develop Indonesia's digital talent. "Especially in producing more competent developers who can later enrich the ecosystem of programs they create," he added.
With support for the development of Indonesia's digital talent, Nezar hopes that these professionals can contribute to various technologies produced by Apple and marketed globally. "We want to be part of the strength in the global market chain that Apple has," he explained.
Through this, Apple is expected to not only meet its obligations related to the TKDN but also contribute to the development of Indonesia's digital talent in the future.
Previously, Investment Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani explained that he was waiting for a response from Apple within a week regarding the investment commitment. "We have communicated, and God willing, for the first stage, I will get a written statement from them for the investment of USD 1 billion," he said during a working meeting with Commission XII of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (December 3).
Rosan emphasized that the government prioritizes the principle of fairness in its approach to Apple. "The government, under President Prabowo's leadership, does not want Apple to only take advantage of Indonesia's economy without providing a return contribution," he said.
