DIGIVESTASI - The Ministry of Transportation plans to operate an Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system as a feeder service during the 79th Independence Day celebration in the new capital city, Nusantara (IKN), on August 17, 2024. The Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, revealed that one ART train set is already available in IKN. In the initial phase, this autonomous tram will serve as a feeder for the ceremony participants, traveling at a speed of 40 km/h along the West and East Sumbu Kebangsaan roads.

"I, along with a team from CRRC China, conducted a test run of the ART today, operating it using road markings. We continue to carry out tests so that by August 17, 2024, this train is ready to operate and serve well," Budi stated in an official release on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

Budi also conducted a test run of the autonomous train in IKN on the same day. The test aims to prepare for the operation of the trackless autonomous train during the 79th Independence Day celebration in IKN. "There was a preliminary trial yesterday. In my opinion, the ART is ready, we just need to conduct further tests to ensure the electrical systems and operations are in place," he added.

The operation of this autonomous train uses a battery system equipped with road markings and magnets, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, thereby supporting IKN’s concept as a smart, green, and sustainable city.

Budi added that the ART will be operated in the Central Government Core Area (KIPP), with a route passing through the West and East Sumbu roads. Additionally, his ministry is working with various stakeholders to provide electric public transportation. Budi also ensured that, gradually, all transportation in IKN will be environmentally friendly.

Previously, the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, confirmed that the autonomous train in IKN Nusantara would begin operations on August 17, 2024. Basuki explained that the autonomous train would be used to shuttle guests and the public attending the Independence Day celebration in IKN. "There will be two train sets, each with three carriages, capable of carrying a total of 300 passengers," Basuki explained.
