As part of its long-term roadmap, Apple Inc. is planning to release its first foldable smartphone by the end of 2026, with the latest projections showing the company’s confidence in shipping between 8 to 10 million units of the foldable iPhone.

This shipment estimate was reported by leading supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who noted that the figure applies to next year, coinciding with the expected launch of Apple’s foldable iPhone.

Apple is reportedly growing more optimistic, believing that by 2027 it could ship between 20 to 25 million units of the foldable iPhone. This is a significant increase compared to its initial target of only 10 to 15 million units.

Kuo further stated that General Interface Solution (GIS) has now joined Apple’s iPhone supply chain, specifically handling the Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) components.

Ultra-Thin Glass requires highly complex backend processing and is up to four times more expensive than standard materials. In this process, GIS collaborates with Corning—Apple’s exclusive raw material supplier—to conduct backend processing of displays, which includes cutting, edge treatment, inspection, both internal and external packaging, and delivery.

“After the backend processing, Corning will ship the iPhone UTG to downstream cutting facilities, such as Lens Technology, where it will be tailored to the specifications of the foldable iPhone. The UTG will then be delivered to panel manufacturer Samsung Display (SDC) for lamination,” Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in his latest blog, published Wednesday (9/3/2025).

In his earlier reports, Kuo also revealed that Apple’s foldable iPhone will adopt a “book-style” fold rather than a clamshell design, featuring an estimated 5.5-inch display that expands to 7.8 inches when unfolded.

Through its supply chain partner Foxconn, Apple is expected to begin foldable iPhone production around September or October, with Samsung Display serving as the key supplier for foldable panels. However, Kuo emphasized that many component specifications are still being finalized.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Power On columnist Mark Gurman previously disclosed that Apple’s foldable device is internally codenamed V68 and will feature a total of four cameras—two on the back, one external, and one internal.

Gurman also leaked Apple’s measured strategy for upcoming iPhone models. In addition to the foldable iPhone expected in 2026, there are also rumors about the iPhone 20.

This smartphone, specifically designed to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, is reported to feature an entirely new design with a curved glass body.

Beyond that, Apple is also said to be planning a foldable iPad, scheduled for release in 2028, which will use the same Ultra-Thin Glass technology.
