The Nusantara National Capital Authority (IKN) has forged a partnership with the global technology company Microsoft to realize Nusantara as the capital with a smart city concept that emphasizes digital technology.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) took place on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in San Francisco, California, USA, ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) high-level conference.
The company founded by Bill Gates will participate in the digital transformation process in IKN. Microsoft is the largest computer operating system and software company.
The Windows computer operating system, a flagship product of Microsoft, is widely known to the public. Microsoft Office software is also widely used. In addition, Microsoft produces a variety of products, ranging from the Microsoft Surface tablet, game consoles, to mobile phones.
IKN was represented by Deputy of Green and Digital Transformation, Mohammed Ali Berawi, and Regional Vice President & Chief Legal Counsel Asia Corporate External & Legal Affair, Mike Yeh.
Bambang Susantono, the head of the IKN Authority, also witnessed the signing of the MoU, accompanied by Green Transformation Director Tonny Agus Setiono, Special Knowledge Management Staff Indrayanto Cahyadi, and Communication Expert cum Spokesperson of the IKN Authority, Troy Pantouw.
Bambang stated that collaboration with digital technology providers is highly appreciated. "We are very grateful for the collaboration that has taken place to build IKN Nusantara," said Bambang in an official statement on Thursday (16/11).
This is in line with the goal of making Nusantara one of the economic growth centers in Indonesia. "This transformation is one of our goals," he added.
With IKN Nusantara becoming a smart city, life in the new capital is expected to become more effective and sustainable. Bambang hopes that, through collaboration with Microsoft and other technology companies, IKN can become a smart city capable of meeting the digital technology needs in various aspects of life.
"For example, E-governance in the government in the Nusantara Capital City must be able to run effectively through digital systems to improve efficiency and the quality of life for its residents," he continued.
Mike Yeh from Microsoft emphasized their readiness to support the digital preparation and planning carried out in Nusantara. Microsoft has always emphasized responsibility, the involvement of all parties, and sustainability in the development of digital technology.
Mike mentioned that with the implementation of digital technology, IKN could become an integrated area in the future. Microsoft's role in IKN includes support for new renewable energy technologies, electric vehicle systems, and autonomous vehicles.
Regarding inclusivity, Microsoft is interested in developing digital literacy through training programs. He said that a similar initiative is currently underway in India, where Microsoft is implementing Azure Open AI in public services.
In the future, Microsoft will further study what can be applied in Nusantara. "We greatly appreciate this collaboration; we have the same framework," said Mike.
Spokesperson for the IKN Authority, Troy Pantouw, stated, "With the acceleration of digital transformation, increased productivity and competitiveness are expected to be achieved through the provision of faster, easier, and more efficient services."
