DIGIVESTASI - The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) plans to encourage the use of Starlink in remote and underserved areas, but does not have plans to prohibit it. Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology Nezar Patria revealed that Kominfo will issue directives for Starlink to focus on serving remote, outermost, and frontier areas (3T).
"Starlink will be directed to serve 3T areas," said Nezar, on Friday (31/5/2024).
However, he explained that the government does not have the authority to limit the sale of Starlink.
"But because the satellites are above, everyone can use them, they can buy the devices. For example, if someone wants to find internet connection while fishing in the middle of the sea and there is no signal, they can use Starlink by subscribing themselves. It depends on each individual," Nezar explained.
He also stated that the technology provided by conventional internet providers has advantages over Starlink. For example, Starlink services have high latency and their signals are easily disrupted by tall buildings.
"We must not forget that Starlink also has weaknesses, unlike a magical cure that can solve all communication problems. Services provided by other mobile operators through fiber optics are sometimes better for certain areas," Nezar added.
