DIGIVESTASI - Trump Calls DeepSeek a Wake-Up Call for US Companies to Compete in Artificial Intelligence, US President Donald Trump stated that DeepSeek, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by the Chinese startup High-Flyer, could serve as a wake-up call for US companies to enhance their competitiveness.

Trump sees the progress made by Chinese companies in creating faster and cheaper AI as a positive development, one that could motivate US companies to compete more effectively.

"The emergence of DeepSeek, an AI from a Chinese company, should serve as an alarm for our industry to focus more on competition and strive to win," Trump said, as quoted by KompasTekno from Reuters on Thursday (January 30, 2025).

Trump also praised DeepSeek for being an AI model that offers faster methods at a significantly lower cost.

"I think this is a good thing because companies don’t have to spend as much money," Trump stated.

He added, "I see this as an advantage because our companies can replicate that approach. This way, we can cut costs while still achieving the desired results."

Trump believes that if the Chinese industry succeeds in creating more cost-effective AI technology, US companies will not fall behind in doing the same.

"We've always been pioneers in innovation and new ideas. This could be a positive development, where we can reduce billions in spending but still achieve the same solutions," Trump remarked.

Meanwhile, Sam Altman, founder of ChatGPT and CEO of OpenAI, also praised DeepSeek.

On his personal X/Twitter account, Altman commented that the large language model (LLM) R1 used by DeepSeek is an impressive model, particularly when comparing its capabilities and cost.

"We will clearly release a much better model, and it's refreshing to have a new competitor! We’ll be rolling out some updates for ChatGPT," Altman wrote.
