DIGIVESTASI - The arrival of Starlink in Indonesia has raised various issues, including the potential to replace cellular operator services. Chairman of the Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel), Sarwoto Atmosutarno, explained that Starlink will complement cellular operators, both in terms of capacity and quantity of services.

"Starlink will be a complement to landline telcos, especially in urban areas. In remote areas that are sparsely populated, Starlink will compete in terms of price and service speed,” Sarwoto told CNBC Indonesia, Friday (7/6/2024).

Sarwoto also emphasized that Starlink will not dominate the telecommunications market. Currently, only New Zealand has recorded the highest users of satellite-based services among other countries.

“From the existing data, Starlink only controls 0.8% of the market segment, with New Zealand as the highest,” he said.

Data obtained by CNBC Indonesia shows that the number of Starlink users in New Zealand is around 40 thousand, or only 0.8% of the country's total internet users of 5 million.

In the United States, Starlink's home country, only 0.39% of internet users use this service, with an estimated number of users of around 1.2 million over 4 years of operation. While this is the highest number of Starlink users in the world, it is still small compared to the 300 million total internet users in the US.

Apart from the US, Canada has the second highest number of Starlink users, at 200 thousand or 0.54% of the total internet users in the country.
