DIGIVESTASI - SpaceX plans to launch a smartphone that can connect to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet. If there are no issues, this product will be released in the fall of this year, or September 2024. According to a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), this plan was revealed. Starlink's direct-to-cell capability allows access to SMS, calls, and internet anywhere, whether on land, lakes, or coastal waters, as reported on Starlink's official website on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Elon Musk's direct-to-cell service will also connect IoT devices with standard LTE connectivity.

The official website states that voice, data, and IoT access via Starlink's direct-to-cell service will begin in 2025. "The Starlink Direct to Cell launch campaign is about to be launched," it said on the official Starlink website.

Starlink explains that the direct-to-cell service can work with existing LTE phones by pointing the phone to the sky. Users will no longer need to use special hardware or applications. "Direct to Cell enables connectivity in remote areas, providing peace of mind for customers who urgently need the service," it added.

According to SignalBoosters on Monday, June 3, 2024, the satellites designed for Starlink direct to cell are different from those used for internet connectivity. SpaceX's second-generation Starlink satellites will be equipped with large antennas that mimic T-Mobile cell towers but from space. These satellites are equipped with innovative custom silicon, highly sensitive radio receivers, high-power transmitters, and advanced software to ensure the satellites can detect and transmit strong signals from space.

These satellites use standard LTE/4G protocols. Compared to 5G, LTE/4G signals have a wider range, which is important for cellular signals from satellites located hundreds of kilometers above Earth. Elon Musk claims that the satellites will transmit directly to mobile phones and eliminate dead zones or remote areas worldwide.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Starlink Direct to Cell

Advantages :
1. Simple and EasyTo use this service, you only need to subscribe to the T-Mobile network or one of Starlink's direct-to-cell partners. Users do not need to set up any equipment, and the device will automatically connect to the satellite if there is a direct view of the sky.

Disadvantages :
1. Slow Performance During Peak Hours : Service performance can be slow during peak hours in areas with many Starlink users.
2. Satellite Signal : Network disruptions can occur, similar to satellite TV services, with rain, snow, and ice possibly interfering with the signal.
3. Network Disruption If there are issues with the Starlink network, many customers will temporarily lose service.
4. Clear Sky View Requirement : A wide view of the sky is necessary to track Starlink satellites, and high obstructions like trees and buildings can reduce satellite performance.
5. Limited Indoor Coverage : Satellite cellular signals may be too weak to penetrate building materials and vehicles.
