DIGIVESTASI - The existence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is indeed bringing great changes to the industry, but only if it can be implemented to its full potential. If we can make the most of it, we can take advantage of millions of AI opportunities and gain tremendous economic value. Microsoft Indonesia President and Director Dalma Simorankil said there are many scenarios where artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to support businesses.

She gave some examples depending on the business needs of each sector. According to her, AI is actually not meant to replace humans, but to help with certain tasks. "At Microsoft, we use AI and generative AI as co-pilots, which means helping people in the pilot role make decisions and take actions," Dharma said during the Tech & Telco Summit in 2024.

He gave some simple examples. First, it allows businesses to serve their customers faster. For example, if a customer lodges a complaint, an AI-based virtual assistant can respond instantly.
Another example is that it makes the company's internal communication flow more effective and efficient. For example, businesses with thousands of employees can get the answers and information they need immediately.
"Generative AI can be trained to answer thousands of questions," he added.

Dharma says the potential of AI is huge and can be used in many more scenarios. It all depends on the needs of the user. Wahyudi Jafar, Executive Director of the Institute for Community Research and Advocacy (ELSAM), also said that AI can change business models and people's way of life.  However, Muhamad Fajrin, Telekom's Digital Business Director, reminded that the application of AI technology must follow the company's business processes. So we don't need to think that AI will leave us behind, but we need to implement it to be better.

"People who can implement AI are good, this happens in all areas of business," Fajulin explained. Fajulin also said telcos are using AI to communicate directly with customers. One of them is a chatbot for customer service in the MyTelkomsel app.

The economic value of AI presents a huge opportunity
The use of AI technology in Indonesia is expected to generate tremendous growth in the digital economy. AI's contribution to global gross domestic income (GDP) is estimated at $3 trillion, or around Rp47,295 trillion (Rp15,765) by 2030.

Budi Aryeh Setiadi, Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Menkominfo), explained that around US$1 trillion of the US$3 trillion will come from Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia alone is expected to contribute $366 billion.
AI embedded in technology has huge business potential and is one of the main drivers of job disruption.  Citing research from the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Future of Work 2023 Report, there are three main factors that will influence future employment changes: the green energy transition, the economy, and the introduction of technology.

How will the application of AI affect future jobs?

In addition, research shows that the boundaries between human and machine work are changing. Data shows that even in 2022, machines will still perform about 34% of tasks compared to humans. In the next five years, this proportion is expected to increase to 43%, with the rest still being performed by humans.

The use of machines that complete tasks faster will continue to increase. According to the survey, for about 75% of respondents, the application of AI is the main reason for adopting the technology.
Of these, 50% expect job growth, while 25% expect job losses.

This suggests that the industry's optimism that AI will create new jobs actually outweighs the potential job losses.

Careers related to AI, sustainability, and business intelligence specialists will be among the three fastest-growing occupations over the next five years. The fastest-growing jobs to disappear are bank tellers, postal workers and cashiers. See the table below for more information.

As a reminder, the study gathered perspectives from 803 respondents/companies and covered 11.3 million workers across 27 industries in 45 countries worldwide. The survey will be used for the next five years (2023-2027).

Overall, AI is disrupting manual work, but our role as human resources in competing with the growing digital development means we must be able to better utilize AI to create new jobs.
