DIGIVESTASI - Meta Plans Ambitious Undersea Fiber Optic Cable Project Spanning 40,000 Kilometers Worldwide, Meta is reportedly planning an ambitious project to build an undersea fiber optic cable stretching 40,000 kilometers across the globe. The project is expected to require an investment of over US$10 billion or around Rp158 trillion.
Details about this project were first revealed by undersea cable expert Sunil Tagare in October. The cable, temporarily named "W Cable," is designed to be exclusive infrastructure owned by Meta, with a route shaped like the letter "W." An internal source close to the company confirmed that the project is still in its early stages. Meta is expected to make an official announcement in early next year, which will include details on the route, capacity, and the strategic reasons behind the cable’s construction.
The purpose of this undersea cable is to provide a dedicated data route for Meta’s applications, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The project includes a route that is designed to stretch from the east coast of the United States to India via South Africa, then back to the west coast of the U.S. through Australia, forming a "W" pattern on the world map.
Meta aims to design the cable route to avoid areas with high geopolitical tension. According to sources, the route is planned to minimize the risk of disruption or sabotage. Tagare also explained that this cable network is designed to avoid volatile areas such as the Red Sea, South China Sea, Egypt, Marseille, Malacca Strait, and Singapore.
In recent years, undersea cables have often been affected by conflicts, both directly and indirectly. For example, conflicts in the Red Sea have led to damage to cables connecting Europe and India, with reports that militant actions by Houthi forces in the region have caused disruptions to maritime communication infrastructure.
