The Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) asked the government to closely monitor TikTok Shop when it resumes operations in Indonesia.
This statement was made by HIPMI Secretary General Anggawira in response to news about TikTok starting to look for local e-commerce partners to be able to operate again in Indonesia after being closed since last October.
Anggawira believes that the presence of the TikTok Shop could actually be something positive for the business ecosystem in the digital realm and foreign investment if it goes well.
In this case, the voice of MSME business actors must be a priority so that the government must supervise the operations of the TikTok Shop in accordance with Minister of Trade Regulation Number 31 of 2023 concerning Business Licensing, Advertising, Guidance and Supervision of Business Actors in Trading Through Electronic Systems.
"But on the other hand, the government needs to monitor its operations in order to prevent what happened some time ago when UMKM entrepreneurs and Tanah Abang Market traders experienced drastic turnover. This happened due to predatory pricing practices that were allegedly carried out at the TikTok Shop," he said. in an official statement released last Friday (24/11).
Therefore, he hopes that TikTok Shop will really show good faith in separating the e-commerce concept from its social media platform.
If it is difficult for TikTok Shop to create its own platform, then to create a good business ecosystem in Indonesia while encouraging strengthened collaboration, the step that can be chosen is to join e-commerce that already exists in Indonesia.
"With this, TikTok Shop can follow the regulations in force in Indonesia, create healthy competition in the e-commerce realm, and can participate in programs to advance the country's UMKM," he said.
News regarding plans to reopen the TikTok Shop actually circulated several weeks ago after news regarding TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew emerged. Chew is said to want to meet President Joko Widodo to discuss the fate of TikTok Shop after its closure due to the official regulation of Minister of Trade No. 31 of 2023 which prohibits social media from being combined with e-commerce.
Then the news that TikTok Shop was planning to reopen became stronger after the Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (Menkop UKM) revealed that TikTok was in talks with Indonesian e-commerce companies regarding partnership opportunities.
Teten said TikTok had been in contact with five companies, including GoTo's e-commerce unit Tokopedia, Bukalapak.com and Blibli.
"Several e-commerce companies in Indonesia have spoken to TikTok," he said in an interview, Monday (13/11), as reported by Reuters.
