PT Pertamina (Persero) is studying gas storage and distribution based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF). The review aims to widen access in areas without pipeline networks and assess natural gas as an alternative to LPG, including its potential to reduce import dependence. The company has not said the technology is already in use; further decisions will depend on the study's results.

Pertamina is working with Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. and Atomis Inc. to evaluate CubiTan®, an Atomis technology that uses porous MOF material to adsorb methane molecules. This mechanism could allow methane to be stored at lower pressure than conventional compressed natural gas systems. The study will also assess gas storage and transport to areas with limited pipeline access and possible use in applications that currently rely on LPG.

Pertamina Deputy President Director Mega Satria said technology collaboration is part of efforts to explore business opportunities, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen energy resilience. She said the study should have clear objectives, stages, and measurable results. Safety, technical and economic feasibility, regulatory compliance, and risk management are among the factors to be reviewed before a decision is made.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron said Indonesia's archipelagic geography calls for distribution options suited to each region's geography and infrastructure. He said the company is exploring innovation to widen access to affordable energy and make use of domestic resources.

The collaboration also covers Yachiyo Engineering and Atomis' Smart Gas Network concept. It combines storage containers with remote monitoring to support delivery planning and gas-use management. The parties will assess how it fits Indonesia's infrastructure, user needs, and regulations. Domestic gas resources, including biomass-based gas, may be considered within the study's scope.

Pertamina said the cooperation remains at the study stage. If it meets technical, safety, regulatory, and economic requirements, the technology could add another gas distribution option; any further implementation has not been confirmed. The company describes the collaboration as part of a dual-growth strategy: strengthening its core business while exploring lower-carbon opportunities.
