Western brands operating in Egypt and Jordan are now feeling the repercussions of the boycott against products affiliated with Israel. The impact of the campaign has also spread to several other Arab countries, including Kuwait and Morocco.

The boycott is being carried out as a form of support for the Palestinian people currently facing attacks from the Israeli military. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement is targeting several well-known brands.

An employee at McDonald's in Egypt, who requested not to be named, stated that franchise sales in Egypt for October and November have dropped by at least 70 percent compared to the same months last year. "We are struggling to cover our own expenses so far," said the employee, as quoted by Reuters on Friday (24/11/2023).

Sameh El Sadat, an Egyptian politician and one of the founders of TBS Holding, a supplier for Starbucks and McDonald's, mentioned that he has observed a decrease or slowdown of around 50 percent in demand from their partners.

In Kuwait City, seven branches of Starbucks, McDonald's, and KFC are noticeably empty of visitors. In Rabat, the capital of Morocco, an employee at a Starbucks branch reported a significant decline in the number of customers this week.

The call for a boycott against Starbucks ensued after the company sued its workers' union over posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Meanwhile, McDonald's is facing a boycott for providing free food to Israeli military personnel.
