DIGIVESTASI - Chipmaker Nvidia has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software platform to support 6G technology research. The platform provides a simulation of the 6G communication ecosystem on cloud infrastructure. The latest mobile technology known as 6G is planned to be launched in 2023 as a replacement for 5G technology.
The telecommunications industry, including mobile infrastructure, is now increasingly using software and AI. One of them consists of radio access network (RAN) hardware and antennas on base stations (BTS). Nvidia's newly released platform offers applications for simulating base stations and entire city environments, among others. These applications give researchers the ability to test 6G networks in real time.
According to Nvidia, the platform is used by Ansys, Nokia, Samsung, SoftBank Corp and Northeastern University in Boston. "The rapid growth in the number of connected devices and new applications in 6G requires a significant leap forward in radio spectrum efficiency for wireless communications," said Ronnie Vashishta, senior vice president of telecommunications at Nvidia.
Reuters quoted telecom analysts as saying that hardware suppliers are no longer the major players in the mobile infrastructure industry. The role of chip manufacturers and cloud providers is increasing and is needed as a new partner.
Nvidia itself hosted a global AI conference for software developers in San Jose, California. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang introduced Nvidia's latest chip which is claimed to be 30 times faster at performing certain tasks than previous chips.
