DIGIVESTASI - The downstreaming of the electric-based motor vehicle industry in Indonesia has continued to show positive developments in the past three years. In addition to increased sales, the manufacturing sector has also made progress. As of the end of the third quarter of 2024, there are at least two manufacturers that have built battery production facilities for electric vehicles (EVs). One of them is a collaboration between LG Energy Solution and Hyundai Motors Corporation from South Korea, which established PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power in Karawang, West Java.
The factory, which was inaugurated directly by President Joko Widodo on July 3, 2024, has a production capacity of 20 gigawatt hours (GWh) and is capable of supplying batteries for 150,000 units of electric vehicles.
The second manufacturer comes from China, Wuling Motors, which is committed to investing around Rp7.5 trillion in the first phase of the construction of a battery factory, named Magic Battery. Construction of this factory is planned to begin at the end of 2024.
Seeing this trend, the question arises when Toyota Indonesia as the market leader of four-wheeled vehicles with a market share of 54 percent will jump into this sector. In response, PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) Deputy General Manager of Marketing Planning, Resha Kusuma Atmaja, confirmed that Toyota will play a role in accelerating vehicle electrification in Indonesia. “But at the moment I can't reveal more. We are still in the study stage for various stakeholders,” Resha said when met in Jakarta on Tuesday (9/24/2024).
Resha emphasized that Toyota will continue to adopt a multi-pathways approach in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. “It's not just batteries for electric vehicles that are the focus, there are many other technologies that can be used to reduce carbon emissions,” he added.
According to Resha, this multi-pathways approach includes various technologies such as hybrid, electric vehicle, fuel vehicle, and flex fuel vehicle. Currently, Toyota Indonesia through PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has produced two hybrid cars in the country, namely Kijang Innova Zenix HEV and Yaris Cross HEV, which have been exported to a number of countries.
