DIGIVESTASI - A research team in Japan has successfully set a new record in internet connection speed, reaching 402 Tbps. The experiment conducted by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) utilized standard optical fiber cables and signal amplification technology, without requiring additional sophisticated equipment.

According to NICT, this method, which utilizes previously unused wavelength bands, could have a significant impact on future technology network infrastructures. They state that this new technology is expected to expand optical communication capacity in line with increasing data service demands.

The internet speed of 402 Tbps far exceeds the speeds of mobile and fixed broadband internet commonly available in Indonesia, as reported in the Global Speedtest Index by Ookla in March 2024. For instance, mobile internet speeds in Indonesia reach approximately 25.83 Mbps, while fixed broadband speeds are around 29.37 Mbps.

This record surpasses the previous achievement set by Aston University in the UK, which achieved a speed of 301 Tbps using similar technology.

NICT plans to further develop this high-speed data transmission technology to address long-distance and transoceanic challenges, although widespread implementation will require careful consideration and substantial investment.
