DIGIVESTASI - A member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) from the PDIP faction, Mufti Anam, expressed his anger over Apple's, the maker of iPhone, demand for a 50-year corporate tax holiday if the company is to invest in Indonesia. Mufti described the demand as excessive and inappropriate.
Mufti made this statement during a working meeting of Commission VI of the DPR with the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Erick Thohir, on Monday (November 4, 2024). He firmly stated that iPhones should be banned from Indonesia.
“There is a lot of buzz on social media right now about the iPhone 16 being banned from entering Indonesia. After investigating, the reason is that Apple is requesting a 50-year tax holiday. This is outrageous. iPhones should be banned from our country,” Mufti said during the meeting.
Mufti also urged the Ministry of SOEs to take immediate action to address this issue, given Erick Thohir’s extensive international network and experience.
“We hope that the Minister of SOEs will step in. You have incredible experience on the international stage, such as in global football, so we hope you can help us reduce our dependency on iPhones,” Mufti stated.
He also criticized Apple's request, particularly given that the company has already made significant profits from Indonesian consumers. In his view, Indonesia should not hesitate to block iPhone products if such demands persist.
“We think they have already made so much profit from the Indonesian public, but when it comes to investing here, they demand a 50-year tax holiday,” Mufti emphasized.
“The people of Indonesia are angry at iPhone. If necessary, ban all iPhone products from this country. This is an insult to Indonesia,” he concluded.
