Xpeng Plans $13.8 Billion Investment in Humanoid Robots

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, Xpeng, is considering a massive investment of up to 100 billion yuan ($13.8 billion) in the development of humanoid robots.

According to Reuters on Tuesday (March 11, 2025), Xpeng’s CEO, He Xiaopeng, stated that while the company’s current investment strategy remains conservative, it is prepared to increase funding in the future.

Speaking during the annual parliamentary session, He revealed that Xpeng has been investing in the humanoid robotics industry for the past five years and is committed to long-term development in this field.

"Xpeng has been engaged in the humanoid robotics industry for five years, and we may continue in this business for another 20 years, with additional investments of 50 to 100 billion yuan," he said, without disclosing the company’s current investment figures.

Intensifying Competition in the Humanoid Robot Industry

Based in Guangzhou, Xpeng first entered the humanoid robotics sector in 2020 and launched its humanoid robot, "Iron," in November 2024. The robot is designed to compete directly with Tesla Bot, marking Xpeng’s push into artificial intelligence-driven industrial solutions.

Xpeng is part of a growing number of automakers investing in humanoid robotics. According to He, car manufacturers like Xpeng could invest 1-2 billion yuan per year in specific industrial applications to develop and deploy humanoid robots.

In addition to Xpeng, Stellantis, backed by Leapmotor, is also assembling a team of engineers dedicated to advancing humanoid robot technology.

China’s Government Support and the Future of Humanoid Robotics

The Chinese government has identified humanoid robotics as a key area for technological innovation, aiming to drive major breakthroughs in the sector.

These robots are expected to be integrated into various industrial applications, including Leapmotor’s factories, where they could replace human workers to enhance operational efficiency.
