The U.S. Federal Reserve kept its benchmark rate in a 3.75%–4% range in its latest decision, announced on October 28, 2026. The vote was 10–2. Two officials, Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack, preferred a quarter-point increase, indicating that some policymakers still view inflation pressure as requiring a tighter response.
Inflation remains in focus
The Fed said inflation was still above its 2% goal and emphasized that future decisions would depend on incoming data. Chair Kevin Warsh gave no firm signal about the December meeting. Holding rates therefore does not amount to a promise that cuts will follow soon.
The central bank also described consumer spending and business investment as solid, while unemployment remained relatively stable. That gives the Fed room to wait, but it also makes an early shift toward easier policy uncertain while inflation has yet to return to target. The split vote reflects differing assessments of the risks.
Markets await PCE data
Investors are watching the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report scheduled for October 29. It will be one input for assessing inflation after the policy decision. Bond markets reacted in different directions after the press conference: shorter-term Treasury yields fell, while longer-term yields rose. That move reflects uncertainty over how long rates may remain at current levels.
For Indonesian investors, the Fed decision can affect the U.S. dollar, global bond yields and capital flows into emerging markets. The effects are not automatic: inflation data, central-bank communication and domestic conditions also matter. Investors should distinguish a single meeting decision from a broader change in policy direction.
